The 2nd Climate Tipping Point Film Festival and Post-Screening Seminar:Outgrow the system

To respond to global sustainability trends and deepen environmental awareness on campus, the China Medical University Office of Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development held a screening of the documentary "Outgrow the system" and a post-screening seminar on the evening of April 22, 2026, designated as "World Earth Day." This event was part of a collaborative screening series with the Green Citizens' Action Alliance for the "2nd Climate Tipping Point Film Festival." The session took place simultaneously in Classroom 101 of the Excellence Building and via Google Meet, with Teacher Jiang Zhong-ren serving as the moderator for the faculty and students in attendance.

"Outgrow the system" examines the economic interactions between society, corporations, and the public through an economic lens, highlighting that excessive economic activity ultimately faces upper limits and environmental constraints. The film encourages reflection on how to shift limited resources away from purely pursuing output value toward enhancing the well-being of all people, thereby creating a truly sustainable economy. During the event, Wei Yang, a researcher from the Taiwan Climate Action Network (TCAN), led a deep discussion on the symbiotic relationship between economic systems and ecological boundaries. Starting with the origins and significance of GDP (Gross Domestic Product), Wei Yang used accessible examples to introduce the core concepts of "Green Growth" and "Degrowth."

The seminar also addressed common public misconceptions regarding "Degrowth." Wei Yang emphasized that this philosophy does not aim for economic recession; rather, it advocates that economic systems should stop blindly chasing GDP growth. Instead, the focus should shift toward reorganizing production and consumption patterns to achieve ecological sustainability and improve overall social welfare.

By adopting a hybrid format, the event allowed students from the Beigang campus, as well as those from Feng Chia University and Asia University, to participate across different locations. Through the combination of film and expert dialogue, the event not only promoted the learning of new sustainability concepts among faculty and students but also successfully ignited interest in climate justice and social transformation across various professional fields. Together, participants learned about sustainable development, enhancing their social consciousness as future citizens.
