China Medical University Announces Launch of Carbon Neutrality Plan at Beigang Campus Commitment to achieving the first single-campus carbon neutrality declaration by 2027 and moving toward a net-zero campus by 2050

As global net-zero transition and climate governance receive increasing attention, China Medical University (CMU) officially launched the Beigang Campus Carbon Neutrality Promotion Plan today, marked by President Ann-Shyn Chiang signing the "Beigang Campus Carbon Neutrality Promotion Commitment." The university will utilize the Beigang Campus as a demonstration site for campus net-zero transition. It commits to completing its first single-campus carbon neutrality declaration by 2027, with the long-term goal of achieving net-zero campus emissions by 2050, demonstrating the medical university system's determination to promote sustainable governance and low-carbon transition.

Concrete Actions in Response to Global Climate Challenges

CMU President Ann-Shyn Chiang stated that as a cradle for nurturing healthcare professionals, the university deeply understands the close connection between climate change and human health. This commitment declaration was jointly attended by President Ann-Shyn Chiang, Chief Sustainability Officer Cheng-Chun Lee, Dean of Student Affairs Meng-Liang Lin, Director of the Beigang Division Hsien-Hui Yang, Leader of the Sustainability Section of the Office of Sustainable Development Ming-Kun Lin, and Leader of the Social Responsibility Section Chin-Yun Hsu.

The declaration for the Beigang Campus is not only a major milestone in university development but also a concrete response to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and national net-zero transition policies. The university emphasized that promoting carbon neutrality is no longer the task of a single department, but a sustainable governance action that requires collective participation and step-by-step implementation across the entire institution.

Cross-Departmental Integration to Build a Scientific Foundation for Carbon Reduction

To fulfill this commitment, CMU's Beigang Campus has formulated a clear roadmap. The core strategies include:

• Comprehensive Carbon Inventory: Prioritizing scientific carbon emission data inventory for scopes including teaching buildings, laboratories, dormitories, transportation, and procurement to establish a transparent baseline database.

• Cross-Departmental Governance: The "Carbon Neutrality Promotion Committee" will be coordinated and supervised by the President. It will integrate administrative units and academic departments, including the Office of Sustainable Development, Office of General Affairs, Office of Academic Affairs, and Office of Research and Development, to build a cross-disciplinary cooperation framework.

• All-Round Energy Saving and Research: Prioritizing the introduction of renewable energy, green procurement, circular economy, and campus greening. Concurrently, faculty members will be encouraged to invest in net-zero technology research, integrating sustainability concepts into educational curricula.

Phased Goals: Launching the First Wave of Operations Within Three Months

The university further explained that over the next three months, the Beigang Campus will enter an intensive implementation phase. This will include launching carbon inventory operations, compiling carbon reduction checklists from various units, and initiating sustainability education campaigns for faculty and students. The university commits to investing the necessary resources and actively seeking external support to ensure both the breadth and depth of the carbon reduction process.

Joining Hands with Faculty, Students, and the Community to Build a Sustainability Laboratory

"Carbon neutrality is our most sincere commitment to the next generation." The CMU President called upon all faculty, students, alumni, and local communities to actively participate in this project. In the future, the Beigang Campus will not only be a place for nurturing medical professionals but will also transform into a low-carbon, sustainable, and socially impactful "campus sustainability demonstration site," contributing to the creation of a healthier living environment.
