On the evening of October 7, 2026, the Office of Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development at China Medical University joined the screening series of the Green Citizens’ Action Alliance’s 2nd Climate Threshold Film Festival. A screening of the documentary Climate Litigation: The Trial of Fossil Fuels, followed by a post-screening discussion, was held simultaneously in Room 203 of the Excellence Building and via Google Meet.
The event opened with introductory remarks by Assistant Professor Hsu Chin-Yun, marking the beginning of the program. The post-screening discussion featured Tseng Hung-Wen, Deputy Secretary-General of the Green Citizens’ Action Alliance, who engaged with faculty and students in cross-disciplinary dialogue on climate-related issues. Duty of Care: The Climate Trials highlights how citizens can use their own efforts to participate in public affairs. The documentary follows attorney Roger Cox and his climate litigation against the Dutch government, an action that inspired people in countries around the world to respond and take action.
Following the screening, Deputy Secretary-General Tseng Hung-Wen connected the issues presented in the documentary to Taiwan’s current circumstances, examining the energy challenges and social responsibilities faced by local businesses. Drawing on actual corporate carbon emissions data, she emphasized that beyond pursuing profits, businesses should also fulfill their social responsibilities by proactively developing responses and carbon-reduction plans addressing the coal consumption, electricity use, and resulting carbon emissions associated with their production activities.
By combining in-person and online participation, the film festival not only overcame geographical and spatial limitations but also encouraged greater awareness and engagement among faculty and students regarding sustainability issues.
