China Medical University and Feng Chia University Collaborate to Launch General Education Course on Climate Resilience

In response to the Central Taiwan University System (M6) initiative to promote climate change education, China Medical University (CMU) and Feng Chia University (FCU) have jointly launched a cross-campus general education course titled “Climate Resilience” for the first semester of the 2025 academic year.

The course is held at Feng Chia University’s Gongshan Building, Lecture Hall V001, and co-taught by FCU’s Chief Sustainability Officer Prof. Chih-Chao Wu, CMU’s Chief Sustainability Officer Prof. Cheng-Chun Lee, and Assistant Prof. Chin-Yun Hsu. A total of 200 students—100 from each university—have enrolled in the course. Faculty and teaching resources are shared between the two institutions, and students can register directly through their university’s internal system without needing to go through the inter-school enrollment process.

Focusing on the theme of climate resilience, the course integrates master lectures and interdisciplinary discussions to help students understand both adaptation and mitigation strategies in the context of climate change. It also strengthens interdisciplinary connections across policy, science, and healthcare. The course officially begins on September 19, featuring renowned scholars and experts from across Taiwan, including policymakers and leaders in climate action, who will share insights into the latest trends and real-world practices.

Prof. Cheng-Chun Lee, Chief Sustainability Officer at CMU, stated that this collaboration not only enhances the diversity of general education offerings but also serves as a significant step in advancing university social responsibility and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Prof. Chih-Chao Wu, Chief Sustainability Officer at FCU, emphasized that the joint initiative fosters educational equity through resource sharing and cross-campus engagement, empowering students with low-carbon and sustainable competencies while encouraging their active participation in societal and industrial transformation.

Both universities noted that this course marks the beginning of deeper sustainable collaboration. Future plans include co-hosted workshops, international forums, and industry-engagement programs designed to raise awareness and encourage action on climate challenges. The goal is to expand Central Taiwan’s influence in climate action education and provide students and the public with concrete pathways for engagement.

In addition, FCU will host a “Sustainable Living Festival” and CMU will organize a “Sustainable Development Learning Week” during the semester. These events may include local farmers’ markets, circular utensil initiatives, hands-on workshops, and cross-campus volunteer projects. They aim to showcase how student organizations creatively engage with the SDGs, promote low-carbon lifestyles, and further strengthen connections between universities and local communities. Through courses, lectures, exhibitions, forums, and actionable projects, the initiative seeks to deepen the academic community’s understanding and participation in environmental, economic, and social sustainability.
